So many families that call us talk about the fact that their loved one was diagnosed with mental illness It is almost impossible to diagnose mental illness when under the influence of drugs or alcohol
It's like hearing the noise in your car engine with the radio volume turned all the way up It's really difficult to see And so many times, addiction can bring out mental illness symptoms And sometimes, it can mask them So if you've got an alcoholic and they're diagnosed depressed, well, alcoholism causes depression
It's a depressant So you don't know what came first: the chicken or the egg And in the defense of the psychiatrists who are misdiagnosing almost all of these people, they're probably not being told the full truth by the addict or alcoholic at the assessment And you can't really question somebody You're not there
You can't call them a liar So you have to go on their word So in less you're completely honest and you're detoxified for at least 30 to 60 days, it's very difficult to see what's going on
