Why Can’t They Kick This? | Intervening for Addiction

A lot of families, the mistake they make is they look at their loved one's life and think, Wow, if that were me, I would stop But the only problem the family has is they're normal people

They don't think like an addict and an alcoholic Most people get a speeding ticket, they never speed again An addict gets a speeding ticket, he just buys a radar detector A non-addict/alcoholic gets a DUI, they never do it again An addict or an alcoholic gets a DUI, they drink at a different bar and take a different way home

They think differently A lot of people that you deal with are college graduates They're accomplished They're such bright people I mean, addicts and alcoholics are extremely loving, caring, brilliant people

And families think, well, they've done so much and so well in other areas of life Why can't they beat this? The same reason they can't beat diabetes or cancer It's an addiction It's an illness It's something that you can't overcome yourself

Addicts and alcoholics can't run their own program There's different types of treatment for everybody My professor in my Addictions Studies once said, In recovery, there are some methods that work for some people some of the time But at the end of the day, the one common denominator that I see is surrender to the professional guidance and the teachability of people who know more than you do
