Youth addictions: how project step is moving the mark

This is your United Way Minute So “step” stands for support, treatment, education and prevention

Project step was started in 2007 and it was started in response to the fact that there were many young people in Ottawa who needed addiction treatment, and weren’t able to find it – they had nowhere to go And so the United Way brought together a group that included Ottawa Public Health, the Champlain LHIN, the Local Health Integration Network, Ottawa Education Network, as well as all four school boards and a number of other partners My son came to me and admitted that he was addicted to cocaine, and basically turned our family upside down And from there, project step became part of our life with Rideauwood and with Dave Smith and getting him help and accessing treatment for him and for myself on how to deal with something so foreign to us I felt lost, I felt paralyzed

Searching online, we were frantic We didn’t know what to do He wanted help, how do you access help for a child who’s finally saying ‘I need help’ It’s so imperative to get youth when they’re just starting, or they’re experimenting with drugs, or they’re being impacted by substances because they’re using them to self-medicate, perhaps mental health issues And it’s just having the conversations about addictions before they become dependent

Without project step and without having Dave Smith and Rideauwood, I can tell you without a doubt that my son would no longer be here He was on a path to destruction Every time he used, he used to try and commit suicide So without a doubt, without these amazing services in our community, I know without a doubt my son would not be here Support project step in the fight against youth addictions in Ottawa
